4 Conclusions Pulsed radio-frequency glow discharge plasma was used to enhance the adhesion of UHMPE with the matrix epoxy resin cured by triethylene tetramine and the following conclusions were obtained. The UHMPE fibers can achieve better modification effect at thumbnail time (5s). With the moderate flow ratio of He/O2 (200:1), the interfacial shear strength can be increased by 3.2 times and the tensile strength is only decreased by 1.45%. As shown in SEM, many micro-cracks were introduced on the treated sample surface. Oxygen-containing functional groups such as hydroxyl group and -COO groups centered at about 3410 and 1645cm?1 were also produced on the fiber surfaces. The polarizing groups and the featured micro-cracks on the fiber surface caused by the plasma treatment lead to the increase of wettability of the fiber surface so as to improve the surface adhesion properties. And this high efficient pulsed RF plasma treatment could have great application in scale up industry line.
