    Highlights

    • A phosphorus-containing, malic acid-based copolyester (PPE) was designed and synthesized.
    • The impact strength of PLA was dramatically increased to 75.3 kJ/m2, achieving a super-tough performance.
    • All PLA/PPEU blends can pass the UL-94 V-0 rating.
    • Both the total heat release and total smoke production of PLA were decreased by adding 15% PPEU.
