HDPEpipeshavebeenwidelyusedasgasorwatertransportpipes.Howtoenhancetheirstrengthandcrackresistanceremainsabigchallenge.ThispaperreportedanovelrotationextrusiontechniquetoprepareHDPEpipeswithhigherperformances.Thistechniquehasthefollowingfeatures:boththemandrelandthediecanrotate,eitherindependentlyorintegratedly;theinnerandouterwallscanbesimultaneouslycooleddown,andthecone-shapedsizingunitcanenlargethepipetomakefurtherhooporientationofPEmolecules.Therefore,thestressandtemperaturefieldcanbeeasilycontrolledduringtherotationextrusionsoastoadjustthecrystallizationandorientationofPE.ThetheoreticalanalysisonfourdifferentrotationmodesrevealedthattheHDPEmeltflowduringtherotationextrusiondeviatedfromtheaxialdirectionandformedacomplicatedhelicalflow,dependingontherotationmode,therotationspeedandtheradialposition.TheexperimentalresultsconfirmedthattheHDPEshish-kebabcrystalformeduponrotationdeviatedfromtheextrusiondirection,whichcouldbefurtherfixedbydoublecoolingonbothinnerandouterwallsofthepipe.Asaresult,theperformancesofthePEpipeweresignificantlyimproved,e.g.,thehooptensilestrengthandthecrackinitiationtimeoftheHDPEpipesmanufacturedbythenovelrotationextrusiontechniquecouldincreaseby78%and544%respectively,ascomparedtothoseoftheconventionallyextrudedpipes.
