【简介】 The UMIST Corrosion and Protection Centre was established in April 1972, based upon the former Corrosion Science Division of the Department of Chemical Engineering, which had been built up by Professor T.K. Ross since 1958. Simultaneously, Professor Graham Wood was appointed to Britains first chair in Corrosion Science.
The publication in 1971 of the Report of the Hoar Committee on Corrosion and Protection had focused public attention on the cost of corrosion (£1,364m. per annum), and the savings possible using existing knowledge (£310m. per annum) updated figures would be naturally much higher. The overall UMIST objective was thus the establishment of an interdisciplinary Centre, which would encourage specialists from different academic disciplines to cross their traditional boundaries to work in relevant areas of corrosion and protection.
