【简介】 The John Innes Centre, located on the Norwich Research Park (UK), is an international centre of excellence in plant and microbial science. Its mission is to carry out fundamental and strategic research, to train scientists and to make its findings available to society.
The scientific research at the Centre makes use of a wide range of disciplines in the biological and chemical sciences, including cell biology, biochemistry, chemistry, genetics and molecular biology. JIC science contributes to UK Technology Foresight priority areas and the needs of its sponsors and user communities.
The John Innes Centre is a registered charity (No. 223852) and a company limited by guarantee (registered in England No. 511709). The JIC Governing Council is responsible for the management and administration of JIC's affairs in accordance with the Memorandum and Articles of Association and charitable status. It is also responsible for developing (with the Director) the long-term vision for JIC.
The JIC leases the extensive land, buildings and glasshouses it uses from the John Innes Foundation an independent charity (registered charity No. 313462) that was formed in 1910 following a bequest from John Innes.
The Sainsbury Laboratory was founded in 1989 on the JIC site as a joint venture between the Gatsby Charitable Foundation, the University of East Anglia, the BBSRC and the JIF. The laboratory has a worldwide reputation for its research in molecular plant pathology and genetics. Although an independent laboratory it is scientifically, physically and administratively linked to JIC.
JIC is required, by the majority of its sponsors (and the Charity Commissioners), to make appropriate provision to protect any Intellectual Property (IP) that arises from its research. JIC and Sainsbury Laboratory technology transfer is largely managed through Plant Bioscience Limited (PBL). PBL is jointly owned by the JIC and the Gatsby Charitable Foundation and is a for-profit technology interaction and intellectual property management company specialising in plant and microbial science.
