【简介】 The Institute of Physical Chemistry (IPCh) of the Polish Academy of Sciences (PAS) was founded in 1955 as the first research institute in Poland dedicated to the chemical sciences.
Professor Wojciech Swietoslawski was the first director of IPCh. He was an eminent physico-chemist whose interests included thermo-chemistry, thermodynamics and physico-chemical basis of coal combustion. The major partner laboratories contributing to the early structure of IPCh included the Department of Structural Studies (lead by prof. W.Trzebiatowski, Wroclaw), Physicochemical Methods of Analysis (prof. W.Kemula), Organic Raw Materials (prof. W.Swietoslawski), Physical Chemistry of Surfaces (prof. B.Kamienski, Cracow), Physical Chemistry of Electrode Processes (prof. M.Smialowski) and Physicochemical Basis of Technology (prof. R.Bretsznajder).
IPCh has been directed consecutively by five professors, i.e., W. Swietoslawski, M. Smialowski, W. Zielenkiewicz, J. Popielawski, and presently by J. Lipkowski. The last two directors took their posts after winning democratic elections.
The arrival of its PAS sibling, i.e., the Institute of Organic Chemistry (IOCh), was an important moment in the history of IPCh. Initially temporarily and now permanently, IOCh shares laboratory buildings with IPCh.
