【简介】 Chemical engineering and Iowa State have been associated for over eight decades since the university granted its first chemical engineering degree in 1914. From the beginning, research and graduate study have been important strengths of the department, which awarded its first M.S. degree in 1918 and its first Ph.D. in 1925. The consistently high quality of the chemical engineering graduate program is recognized by both the academic and the industrial communities. The faculty in the department are acknowledged leaders in a number of areas of teaching and research, including biotechnology, catalysis, crystallization, materials processing, thermodynamics, and fluid mechanics. External support for the graduate program comes from alumni and friends of the department, plus more than 40 government agencies and industrial firms.
Approximately 400 students are enrolled in chemical engineering programs at ISU, including about 60 full-time graduate students. Of these, three-fourths are pursuing the Ph.D. The graduate student body is well qualified and diverse, representing leading colleges and universities in the United States and many other countries. All of the departments research involves collaboration between students and the graduate faculty. With 16 members, the faculty is large enough to give students a wide range of choices for research.
