【简介】 Institute of Biotechnology is part of the Department of Biology at the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology
Education and research at the Institute of Biotechnology (IBT) are focused on the application of microorganisms and enzymes for the production of useful compounds. The Institute covers all relevant aspects in this field: the enzymes involved (enzymology) the encoding genes and their regulatory systems (genetics), the synthesis rate limiting factors (modelling of cell metabolism, flux analysis), the identification of new enzyme systems and microbial strains (screening), the application of the microorganisms and enzymes (bioreactors, two-phase systems).
Research is organised within two main groups:
The group of Prof. J. Bailey focuses on the engineering of biosynthetic pathways to create modified or novel compounds, and on flux analysis to optimize carbon and energy utilization.
The group of Prof. B. Witholt focuses on the bacterial production of bioplastics and the use of enzymes and whole microbial cells as biocatalysts for the synthesis of fine chemicals.
