【简介】
The first professor of chemistry, dr. Christian Knakkergaard Moller, was appointed on April 1, 1966, as were 11 other professors. They were to receive the first students of the new university at semester start, 1 September 1966. About one third of the 180 newly matriculated students wanted to study medicine. These 59 were the first students to receive chemistry lessons at Odense University. During 1966 further three teachers of chemistry were appointed to assist at the lectures.
The entire university, and thereby Department of Chemistry, was sited at The Engineering College of Odense in the new "block E". The block had been projected, but building activities were accelerated because of the great need for room. As the university grew, block E became too narrow and a still larger number of departments and institutes moved to 'barakkerne', a row of temporary buildings near The Engineering College. Department of Chemistry stayed in block E together with e.g. Department of Anatomy. In the end, however, it became too narrow for them too, and in 1972-73 the laboratory exercises courses in chemistry were given in 'barakkerne'. In August 1973 the department moved, as one of the first departments, to the permanent building at Campus. For many years, about one third of the "natural" area of Department of Chemistry was inhabited by The Physics Department until they were given their own section. Gradually, the need for room increased, and in August 1996 a new building sec tion was opened and the departmental area thereby considerably extended.

At first, only lessons in propedeutic chemistry for medical students were given. In 1972, however, the basic education at The Faculty of Natural Sciences was introduced, the start of the natural science candidate degree programs ('cand.scient.'). Part of the basic education was also included in the medical education. From 1974 the students at the basic education were given the possibility of choosing between a two-subject combination study consisting of two of the following subjects: Mathematics, physics, chemistry, biochemistry and biology, or a study in experimental biology. In 1982 another possibility was given, namely a combination of chemistry and business administration. In the same year the introductory course for the chiropractor study was approved, in which the chemistry part was identical to that of the basic education.

In 1986 the department entered into a collaboration with The Engineering College of Odense (IOT) on the education as chemical engineer. The basic and theoretical chemistry courses are taught at Odense University by the departmental staff. The engineering courses are taught at The Engineering College and the education is completed here too. 1990 was the year when a two-year Master's Degree in chemistry specially for chemical engineers from The Engineering College was established, and in 1996 an education in technical environmental chemistry based on the education as civil engineer from The Engineering College was approved. In 1998 they became part on a M.Sc.Eng. program in Chemistry and Environmental Technology, respectively.

The year of 1990 will be remembered as the year when the bachelor degree program was officially introduced. Before this, The Faculty of Natural Sciences at Odense University had participated in a two-year pilot scheme. In 1991 the four-year Ph.D. program was initiated at the Faculty as a pilot scheme as well. One year later, in 1992, a national regulation on the Ph.D. study program made it possible to carry through a four-year Ph.D. study program without previously finishing the master's degree (the so-called '4+4 scheme').

Today there are about 70 employees at Department of Chemistry: About 25 tenured faculty members and about 15 non-tenured faculty members, guests, and Ph.D. students. Add to this about 30 members of the technical and administrative staff, many of them are part-time employees. There are about 25 Ph.D. students and about 35 M.Sc. students at the department. The number of students has been stagnant during the past ten years, which will appear from the number of graduates per year. However, to this must be added the department's contribution to the education of almost 50 chemical engineers and chiropractors per year. The number of VIPs has been stagnant during the last 10 years or even decreasing. The apparent increase in the staff since 1998 is caused by Ph.D. student on salary from the department.
