The Department of Chemistry offers programs leading to BS, M.S. and Ph.D. degrees in the traditional areas of chemistry: analytical, biochemistry, inorganic, organic, and physical. It has a wide variety of research projects in progress, ranging from highly theoretical studies to developing practical applications of chemical technology.
The department is well equipped for doing research. They have a variety of modern instruments which are used "hands-on" by graduate students in their research. These include facilities for X-ray analysis of crystal structures, multinuclei nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy, mass spectrometry techniques (including exact mass determination, MS/MS experiments, fast atom bombardment and electrospray capability), scanning probe microscopy, and a variety of sophisticated surface analysis techniques. Fluorescent, infrared, Raman, ultraviolet, and visible spectrophotometers are available as are gas and high performance liquid chromatographs. In addition to the Universityas mainframe computer, the department maintains a Silicon Graphics work-station and has generous access to the Cray Supercomputer at the Alabama Supercomputing Center. |
