【简介】 The department's tradition of access extends to equipment and facilities in Seaver Chemistry Laboratory, where the department makes no distinction between faculty research and teaching in the use of instrumentation. Notable laboratory equipment includes a General Electric 300 MHz Fourier-transform NMR spectrometer, a Mattson Fourier-transform infrared spectrophotometer, a Hewlett-Packard quadrupole mass spectrometer with a capillary gas chromatograph and a computerized data system, a tunable dye laser, a high-resolution fluorescence spectrometer with an excimer laser, and a research-grade monochromator. Silicon Graphics workstations allow students and faculty to generate and manipulate images of molecules that appear three-dimensional.
Seaver Chemistry Laboratory houses the Pomona Medicinal Chemistry Institute, which has been a leader in the development of computer algorithms for medicinal chemistry and maintains databases in that field. The department also employs three technicians for the laboratory, a machinist, and electronics technician, and a laboratory technician who helps design, build, and maintain experimental equipment.
Seeley G. Mudd Science Library subscribes to 150 journals related to chemistry. The library has the capability for on-line database searches, which are normally a part of each student's thesis.
The Chemistry Department's Robbins Lectureship annually brings a prominent chemist to the campus for a week of lectures and meetings with students.
