【简介】 Northwestern's Department of Chemistry offeres PhD programs in the fields of analytical, inorganic, organic, and physical chemistry as well as biochemistry and chemical physics. Since modern chemical research is increasingly interdisciplinary, the department does not maintain autonomous divisions; much of their current research cuts across boundaries to include fields such as archaeological, bioorganic, bioinorganic, biophysical, catalytic, medicinal, and solid-state chemistry.
Their cross-disciplinary approach extends to other graduate programs in the University, including biochemistry, molecular biology, and cell biology; chemical, mechanical, and electrical engineering; materials science and engineering; and physics.
This proximity promotes interdepartmental research collaboration. Research capabilities have been further enhanced by a $125 million renovation of the Technological Institute building, completed in 1999. Along with facilities for other departments, chemistry research laboratories and facilities were rebuilt to meet the specific needs of individual groups and upgraded to state-of-the-art specifications. Construction of the $29 million Center for Nanofabrication and Molecular Self-Assembly, which will house labs for a number of chemistry faculty members, began in 1999.
The quality of their faculty can be judged by the large number of competitive awards and honors they have earned. Three are members of the National Academy of Sciences. Professor John A. Pople was awarded the 1998 Nobel Prize in Chemistry. Numerous other awards and positions are detailed in the faculty's biographical data in this booklet. Northwestern consistently ranks among the top 10 U.S. institutions for chemistry pub lication citations.
