【简介】 The Department of Chemistry of Ohio State University is consistently ranked as one of the best in the nation by the National Research Council and others.
Their faculty members include a member of the National Academy of Sciences, Ohio Eminent Scholars, Sloan Fellows, Dreyfus Teacher-Scholar awardees, and fellows of the American Physical Society, the American Ceramic Society, and the American Association for the Advancement of Science. Several faculty hold major national awards from the American Chemical Society and have distinguished themselves numerous times with research.
The department is home to approximately 350 graduate students and postdoctoral fellows. They emphasize the research and research-skill component of the master's and Ph.D. degrees and provide the resources and guidance necessary for students to become independent scientists. Each student works with a faculty adviser to develop an individual program of course work including advanced seminars, independent study, and extensive research.
As a large department, they are able to offer excellent opportunities for training in all of the major areas of chemistry. Many of their faculty members' research interests span several areas or bridge the fields of chemistry, biology, physics, and materials science providing opportunities for interdisciplinary research. Many of their faculty members accept graduate students from Ohio State's interdisciplinary programs in chemical physics, biochemistry, materials research, and environmental sciences.
Their department also has close ties with a number of interdisciplinary centers and programs on campus including the Ohio State Biochemistry Program, the Center for Materials Research, and the Chemical Physics Program. These programs provide additional opportunities and facilities to those involved in research at the boundaries of chemistry, physics, biology, and materials science.
For the past 50 years, Ohio State has been the site of the most important meeting in spectroscopy: The Ohio State University International Symposium on Molecular Spectroscopy. The annual meeting brings together outstanding scientists from all over the world to discuss current advances in molecular spectroscopy.
