【简介】 The National Institute of Health Sciences (NIHS) is one of seven research institutes operated under the auspices of the Ministry of Health and Welfare. NIHS is responsible for conducting basic research to ensure the quality, efficacy and safety of a wide range of products that directly and indirectly affect the populace. BY ensuring that the policies of the Ministry of Health and Welfare reflect the results of such research, NIHS fulfills its mission of improving the quality of life for Japan's citizens. The matters investigated by NIHS are inseparable from the very fabric of daily life, and proper evaluation of these issues is necessary in order to provide maximum benefit to the consumer.
Rapid advances in science and technology are constantly bringing into focus new issues that impact on public health and the quality of life. NIHS shoulders responsibility for regulating the fruits of science and technology in order to ensure that these advances work to the benefit of mankind. This effort to harmonize scientific progress with the needs of the people can best be thought of as regulatory science. Within this context, NIHS will continue to fulfill its mission of protecting and enriching public health through the formulation of proper assessment procedures and regulations.
The National Institute of Health Sciences (NIHS), which was established in Tokyo in 1874 as the Tokyo Drug Control Laboratory, is now a major organization within the Ministry of Health and Welfare. It is the oldest health research institutein Japan, and is now composed of 18 divisions, the Osaka Branch and 5 Experimental Stations for Medicinal Plants. The Experimental Stations are Iocated in Hokkaido, Tsukuba, Izu, Wakayama, and Tanegashima, areas that range from the subfrigid to the subtropical zones in terms of climate.
