A Short History
The National Academy of Sciences (NAS) of Ukraine was set up November 27, 1918 at the organizational general meeting. Its first President was V. I. Vernadsky - a world-known scholar, geologist and geochemist. Academy's presidents were always elected from the most renowned scientists: M. P. Vasilenko (1921-1922), O. I. Levitsky (1922), V. I. Lipsky (1922 - 1928), D. K. Zabolotny (1928 - 1929), O. O. Bogomolets (1930 - 1946), O. V. Palladin (1946 - 1962). Since 1962 NAS of Ukraine has been headed by B. E. Paton.

In the 80 years, the Academy's name has been changed four times. Before 1921 its name was the Ukrainian Academy of Sciences, from 1921 to 1936 - the All-Ukrainian Academy of Sciences, from 1936 to 1991 - the Academy of Sciences of the Ukrainian SSR, from 1991 to 1993 - the Academy of Sciences of Ukraine and since 1994 - it has been the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine.

NAS of Ukraine is the oldest and the largest among the republican academies that existed in the USSR. In the year of its organization, the Academy consisted of three scholarly departments - those of history and philology, physics and mathematics, social and economic studies, which, in turn, covered 3 institutes and 15 commissions. 140 scholars worked in them. Now NAS of Ukraine has 13 departments, about 170 institutes and other research institutions, employing above 13 thousand researchers.

A constellation of outstanding scientists, who have established its leading science schools, has grown up within the Academy. Mathematicians D. O. Grave, M. M. Krylov, M. M. Bogoliubov, mechanics scientists O. M. Dynnyk and M. O. Lavtrentiev, physicists K. D. Sinelnikov and L. V. Shubnikov, geologist P. A. Tutkovsky, chemists L. V. Pisar-zhev-sky, O. I. Brodsky, A. V. Dumansky, biologists and physicians D. K. Zabolotny, O. O. Bogomolets, V. P. Filatov, I. I. Schmalhausen were among them.

A leading place in the world science belongs to Ukrainian schools of electric welding, started by E. O. Paton, and of cybernetics, started by V. M. Glushkov. Economics and humanities schools headed by economists M. V. Ptukha and K. G. Vobly, historians M. S. Hrushevsky and D. I. Yavornitsky, orientalist A. Yu. Krymsky, linguist L. A. Bu-lakhovsky, literary history scholars S. O. Yefremov and O. I. Biletsky are well known the world over.
