【简介】 In 1957, the Department of Chemistry became the first department at the University of Rhode Island to offer the Doctor of Philosophy degree. Since that time, the department has grown to 17 full-time faculty, 3 jointly appointed faculty, approximately 40 graduate students, and a number of postdoctoral associates. A support staff aids faculty and students in both research and teaching.
Research is the heart of graduate education. The Department of Chemistry offers programs in analytical, inorganic, organic, physical chemistry and biochemistry, but students are not restricted to these traditional areas. The wide variety of scientific regimens represented at the University creates an ideal environment for interdisciplinary research in fields related to chemistry. Thus, students have the opportunity to collaborate in their thesis work with University staff members from fields such as oceanography, geology, engineering, agricultural science, medicinal chemistry, and pharmacognosy.
Also affiliated with the University is NMR Concepts, an independent institute physically located in the Department of Chemistry. This institute and the URI NMR Research Laboratory teach and collaborate in a wide variety of research projects with industrial, academic, and governmental organizations.
