The Department of Material Science was established in 1990 with the purpose of providing education and research opportunities in the broad field of contemporary material science. Its course program and research activities cover not only the various areas of material science but also a wide range of related subjects in physics and chemistry, including pure and applied mathematics. The department is further intended to be complementary with the other interdisciplinary department of the faculty, the Department of Life Science. Jointly, the department offers unique patterns of studies in the natural sciences.
