【组织简介】 The Royal Australian Chemical Institute [RACI], founded in January 1917, is both the qualifying body in Australia for professional chemists and a learned society promoting the science and practice of chemistry in all its branches.
The Institute has 9,800 members and was granted a Royal Charter in 1932. It is concerned with the teaching and practice of chemistry and with the application of chemistry in industry, academia and government authorities. Thus, it represents and caters for the professional needs of all chemists, providing various activities and services that encompass the profession of chemistry in Australia.
The Institute is committed to maintaining and improving the status of the profession of chemistry. A salary survey of the profession throughout Australia is undertaken annually with the report and results published in the Institutes magazine.
The activities of the Institute are directed by its Council, consisting of the President, President Elect, Honorary General Secretary, Honorary General Treasurer, the Presidents of the eight Branch Committees, and the Chairpersons of four of the thirteen National Divisions, with the advice of a number of specialised committees. The implementation of Council directions and policy and business activities are professionally managed by the National Secretariat.
Structure of the RACI There are Branches of the Institute based in all state capitals, Darwin and Canberra. Sections and Groups are based in various centres throughout Australia.
The thirteen Divisions of the Institute are concerned with the specialised disciplines of Analytical Chemistry, Cereal Chemistry, Chemical Education, Colloid and Surface Science, Electrochemistry, Environmental Chemistry, Industrial Chemistry, Inorganic Chemistry, Medicinal and Agricultural Chemistry, Organic Chemistry, Physical Chemistry, Polymer, and Solid State Chemistry.
Many of these are mirrored at Branch level, and there are groups in some Branches dealing with Commercial Services, Pharmaceutical Chemistry, Environmental and Toxicological Chemistry and also special interest groups such as NIR (Near Infra Red).
A National Convention is held every five years. The 11th National Convention was held this year in Canberra [6th - 11th February 2000]. The disciplinary Divisions arrange national symposia in their own fields of interest at more frequent intervals. National Chemistry Week has been an annual event since 1982 with the National Chemistry Quiz involving more than 70,000 students from 1,000 schools in Australia and eight neighbouring countries. The Australian Chemistry Resource Book is distributed to all participating schools and is available to the wider community.
The Institute publishes the monthly magazine, Chemistry in Australia, containing edited articles of a technical nature, information and news items about chemists, the chemical industry, science and industry policy, chemical industry awards, appointments and similar matters of interest to all professional chemists. It also includes reviews of new scientific books and computer software. In addition, Branches and Divisions frequently publish the proceedings of their conferences or symposia and newsletters. Special publications are also produced and are available to members.
