The Manufacturers and Chemical Industry Council of North Carolina (MCIC) was formed in 1988 by ten companies interested in becoming active in helping develop environmental policies in North Carolina. The MCIC is a non-profit association that was originally formed to serve chemical and pharmaceutical companies. In 1994, the association expanded to include companies who use chemicals in a manufacturing process.

The purpose of the Manufacturers and Chemical Industry Council of North Carolina is to promote the interests of the manufacturing and chemical industries of North Carolina. Related purposes of the Council include:

· Working effectively with state and local governments (and when appropriate, with the federal government) to provide leadership, information and services in the development of policies, laws and regulations regarding the manufacture, use and handling of chemicals. These laws, regulations and policies are created in order to protect public health, the environment and the vitality of the manufacturing and chemical industries in North Carolina.

· Promoting the use of sound science, engineering and economics in legislative and regulatory processes.

· Sharing among members information that will enhance each members capabilities to operate responsibly and successfully while protecting its employees, the community and the environment.

· Informing and educating the general public about industry and environmental, health and safety issues.

· Fostering positive relationships between industry leaders and key state legislative and regulatory officials.

· Promoting a positive, proactive image of North Carolina chemical, pharmaceutical and manufacturing industries.
