Temperature-triggered directional motion of tiny water droplets on bioinspired fibers in humidity
We designed a kind of smart bioinspired fiber using the N-isopropylacrylamide
(NIPAAm) polymer, with roughness and curvature
features similar to those of wetted spider silk. The motion of tiny
water droplets can be manipulated reversibly in directions by the
effective cooperation of multi-gradients such as roughness, curvature
and temperature-responsive wettability.

(Adv. Mater.) Functional Fibers with Unique Wettability Inspired by Spider Silk
Spider silk has been an attractive biopolymer since ancient times. Learning from both its excellent properties and spinning process, silk provides people with inspiration to develop functional fi bers. Recently, inspired by shiny water droplets on a spider’s web, we revealed that the capture silk of the cribellate spider would deform to have a special periodic spindle-knots structure and hen...

(Small) Large-scale fabrication of bioinspired fibers for directional water collection
we show that a fl uid-coating method can be applied to continuously fabricate periodic spindle-knots on nylon fi bers on a large scale. More importantly, such bioinspired fi bers have the ability of directional water collection when placed in fog.

(Adv. Mater.) Controlling Water Capture of Bio-inspired Fibers with Hump Structures
we show that geometrically
engineered thin fi bers possess much stronger water capture
ability than previously anticipated, which is attributed to an
unusual three-phase contact line (TCL) extending axially along
the fi bers, resulting from spider silk-inspired hump structures
on their surface. The hump structures can improve the stability
of TCL through the combination of “ slope &rdq...

Synchrotron FTIR Microspectroscopy of Single Natural Silk Fibers. Biomacromolecules, 2011, 12(9): 3344-3349
Synchrotron FTIR (S-FTIR) microspectroscopy was used to monitor the silk protein conformation in a range of single natural silk fibers (domestic and wild silkworm, and spider dragline silk). With the selection of suitable aperture size, we obtained high resolution S-FTIR spectra capable of semi-quantitative analysis of protein secondary structures. For the first time, we have determined from S-FTI...

Fabrication of Polylactide/Poly(ε-caprolactone) Blend Fibers by Electrospinning: Morphology and Orientation
Industrial & Engineering Chemistry Research, 2012, 51, 3682-3691.
ABSTRACT:
Randomly-oriented fiber mats and well-aligned fiber bundles of the biodegradable polylactide (PLA)/poly(?-caprolactone) (PCL) blends were successfully produced by electrospinning in the present study. For the reticulate fibers, the effects of blending ratio of two polymers and compositions of mixed solvents on fiber...

The mechanical, thermal and crystallization behavior of polypropylene composites reinforced by aramid fibers
This paper reports the mechanical and thermal properties together with the crystallization behaviour of pure PP and PP composites containing 5 wt%, 10 wt%, 20 wt%, 30 wt% and 40 wt% aramid fibers. The mechanical properties of samples were evaluated by the tensile and izod notched impact testings, and the results show that the tensile strength of the composites can reach up to 54 MPa, while the ...

Electrospinning of cellulose-based fibers from NaOH/urea aqueous system
Cellulose-based fibers were prepared by electrospinning from cellulose dissolved in NaOH/urea in the presence of a small amount of polyol binders. The as-spun products were examined with SEM. Pure cellulose solution did not produce fibrous materials, because it often formed spherical nanoparticles with diameters ranging from 100 to 300 nm. However, bicomponent fibrous materials were obtained succe...
