Potassium titanate whiskers (PTW) were modified by silane coupling agent KH-570 before and after coating with inorganic SiO2. The influence of the PTWs modified by silane coupling agent before and after coating with SiO2 on thermal insulation performance of coil coating were compared. PTWs before and after modification were characterized by infrared (IR) spectroscopy and thermo-gravimetry (TG). The results indicated that SiO2 is bound on the surface of PTW with chemical bond and an organic coating layer of KH-570 is formed. The test results of heat insulation performance of the coating demonstrated that the thermal insulation of coil coating is remarkable improved by using the PTWs modified by KH-570 after coating with SiO2.The heat reflectivity of the coating reaches 75.4%, an increase of 34.4 and 12.8 percentage points as compared with the coatings without PTWs and with PTWs directly modified by KH-570, respectively.
