Constructing 2D gold nanorods (Au NRs) monolayer films with precise particle assembly behavior is of great importance to fundamental and real applications. However, there are usually invariable with the restriction of macroscopic size, freestanding, density of the particle packing, and precisely controllable particles orientation in 2D Au NRs monolayer film. In the present study, the macroscopic, uniform, freestanding orientational 2D Au NRs monolayer film is facilely and controllably prepared through precisely assembly of the asymmetrically modified Au NRs at water–oil interface. The assembling  morphologies (including disorder, side by side [SS], end to end [EE] morphologies) of Au NRs can be controlled through regulating the interaction between Au NRs by varying the amounts and sites of modified molecules on Au NRs. The intriguing tunable assembling morphologies exhibit not only adjustable absorption spectrum in a wide range attributed to different particle coupling, but also optimized photothermal conversion capability under low energy density. The optimized SS assembles can be capable of remarkable photothermal response under low laser energy density (0.08 W cm?2) to match the wavelength of the laser. Together with a commercial thermochromic dye, the patterned SS assembles are utilized to reproduce accurate full images in 20 s that are invisible after laser off in 10 min. The excellent laser writing performance is demonstrated by writing any information on thermochromic dye-coated SS assembles, further achieving the excellent photothermal anticounterfeiting performance. With the advantages of macroscopic, equipmentfree, transferability, scalability, and high photothermal conversion capability, the ubiquitous orientational Au NRs monolayer films pave the way for ondemand design of various sensing and device applications.
