Abstract: The effect of particle size on impact strength of polymer blends with ductile fracture was studied. A criterion for the brittle-ductile transition was proposed based on the critical particle size concept. The results show that there exists a critical particle size for toughening: when the rubber particle size is below this critical value, the blend exhibits ductile fracture with high impact strength; when the particle size exceeds this critical value, brittle fracture occurs. The experimental results are in good agreement with the theoretical predictions. This study provides important theoretical guidance for the design and optimization of toughened polymer blends.
