Using transmission electron microscopy (TEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD) and small-angle X-ray scattering (SAXS) methods, we demonstrate that organo-clay could be easily exfoliated by simply compounding it with commercially available telechelic liquid polybutadiene rubber (Hydroxyl Terminated PolyButadiene, HTPB). Liquid polybutadiene rubber without hydroxyl end groups could only form intercalated composite with the organo-clay. It is suggested that the functional end groups of HTPB, which interact with both the organo-modifier and the clay surface, have significant effect on the exfoliation of clay.
