Multifunctional JMs  can  be cost-effectively obtained  via a simple

coating  and  peeling  strategy  for  smart  uses  in  water  collection,

lossless  transportation,  decontamination,  on-off  control,  and

microreaction. The novel strategy will accelerate the evolution of

Janus  membranes  (JMs)  from  a  scientific  concept  to  useable

materials for the “real” world.

Janus  membranes  (JMs)  with  unidirectional  liquid  permeation  have  attracted  great

attentions.  However,  current  strategies  for  the  fabrication  of  JMs  still  face  many

obstacles  such as tedious processes, harsh conditions, or high cost, and the available

JMs  are  typically  unifunctional,  limiting  their  broad  applications.  Herein,  based  on

commercial  composite  membranes,  a  simple  coating  and  peeling  strategy  was

designed  for  realizing  cost-effective  multifunctional  JMs.  Coating  can  endow  the

commercial  membrane  with  designed  functionality;  while  peeling  can  render  it

asymmetric  wettability,  which  will  finally  transform  commercial  membrane  into

multifunctional  smart  JMs.  As  demonstration,  a  magnetic  JM  derived  from  this

strategy  can  be  utilized  for  magnetic-driven  collection,  lossless  transportation  and

decontamination of wastewater, and a pH-responsive JM can realize responsive gating

and release of water droplets. Our novel strategy can act as a versatile platform for

fabrication  of  diverse  JMs,  accelerating  the  evolution  of  JMs  from  unifunctional

materials to multifunctional devices with advanced  smart applications for the “real”

world.
