Most lignin-based materials reported so far exhibit poor mechanical properties which still differ from the requirements of commercialization. Here, organosolv lignin was selected as raw materials and a series of lignin-graft-poly(methyl methacrylate) (OL-g-PMMA) copolymers were prepared via activators regenerated by electron transfer for atom transfer radical polymerization (ARGET ATRP). FT-IR, 1H NMR, and SEC analyses confirmed that PMMA chains have been successfully grafted onto organosolv lignin. Thermal analysis indicated that the lignin core could help increase the glass transition temperatures as well as thermal stability of OL-g-PMMA copolymers. More importantly, the introduction of lignin not only improved the mechanical properties of PMMA, but also induced UV resistance properties. This novel approach can be generalized to design natural biomass based copolymers with desired mechanical properties.
