The collapse transition of thermoresponsive dendronized polymers could be characterized on a molecular scale by CW EPR spectroscopy. Above the collapse temperature TC, the aggregation of the complete polymer sample is triggered by dynamic structural inhomogeneities of a few nanometers: While macroscopically a sharp phase transition, this study reveals that the dehydration of the polymer chains proceeds over a temperature interval of at least 30 °C and is a case of a molecularly controlled non-equilibrium state.
