The first Symposium on Innovative Polymers for Controlled Delivery (SIPCD 2010) was successfully held in September 14-17, 2010 in Suzhou Garden Hotel.  SIPCD 2010 was organized by Soochow University and Changchun Institute of Applied Chemistry of the Chinese Academy of Sciences. Prof. Jan Feijen (Soochow University) was served as Chair of the International Organizing Committee. Prof. Renxi Zhuo (Wuhan University, Member of Chinese Academy of Sciences), Prof. Xiulin Zhu (President of Soochow University) and Prof. Lijia An (Director of Changchun Institute of Applied Chemistry, Chinese Academy of Sciences) were served as Chairs of the Chinese Organizing Committee. Prof. Zhiyuan Zhong (Soochow University), Prof. Jan Feijen (Soochow University) and Prof. Xuesi Chen (Changchun Institute of Applied Chemistry, Chinese Academy of Sciences) were served as Chairs of the Executive Organizing Committee.

336 participants from 92 institutions and industries have attended the Symposium.  The lectures were given by world-wide top scientists in the fields of polymers, controlled drug delivery, protein and cell delivery, gene delivery, polymer-based diagnostics, and tissue engineering, which include more than ten editors and associate editors of top international journals (e.g. J. Control. Release, J. Biomed. Mater. Res., Eur. J. Pharm. Biopharm., Pharm. Res., Tissue EngineeringJ. Polym. Sci. Part A: Polym. Chem., Macromolecules, Biomacromolecules). There were in total 181 poster presentations. Kyung-Min Kim (Hanyang University, Korea), Ji Hyun Ryu (Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology), Jianxun Ding (Changchun Institute of Applied Chemistry, Chinese Academy of Sciences), Wen-Ming Liu (Wuhan University, China), Sebastien Cajot (University of Liege, Belgium), and Jun Yang (Zhejiang University, China) have received the Best Poster Awards.

SIPCD 2010 would publish a Special Issue in the Journal of Controlled Release (new impact factor 5.949). In addition to having been assembled into a formal abstract book with an ISBN code (978-7-81137-581-7), all poster abstracts presented during the symposium would be published on line in the Journal of Controlled Release.

SIPCD 2010 was proudly supported by the National Natural Science Foundation of China, Dutch Program for Tissue Engineering, Soochow University, Changchun Institute of Applied Chemistry of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, Samyang Corporation, Purac Biomaterials, Angiotech, Roche, Elsevier, Ssens B.V., Sympatec GmbH, The First Affiliated Hospital of Soochow University, Thermo Scientific, polymer.cn and biomat.net.

SIPCD 2010 was initiated and implemented by Soochow University Biomedical Polymers Laboratory. The Executive Organizing Committee highly appreciates the great support and contribution of The International and Chinese Organizing Committee Members, Invited Speakers, Session Chairs, Poster Presenters, Best Poster Award Committee Members, Enthusiastic Audience, and Sponsors, which make the SIPCD 2010 a memorable event!

We are very pleased that SIPCD 2010 has been widely recognized as one of the top international symposiums on biomaterials and controlled delivery. We hope to see you in September 2012.
