Zhiyuan Zhong is a Distinguished Professor and Chair of Soochow University Biomedical Polymers Laboratory, Dean of College of Pharmaceutical Sciences, and Associate Editor of Journal of Controlled Release. He received his B.Sc. degree in 1995 from Jilin University of Technology (now: Jilin University), M.Sc. degree in 1998 from Changchun Institute of Applied Chemistry of the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS), and PhD degree in 2002 from the University of Twente (The Netherlands) under the supervision of Prof. Dr. Jan Feijen. He worked as an assistant professor at the Department of Polymer Chemistry and Biomaterials of the University of Twente in 2002-2007, and visited the Department of Pharmaceutics and Pharmaceutical Chemistry at the University of Utah in 2004. As from 2007, he was appointed as a full professor at Soochow University. In 2011-2012, he worked as a Vice President of Suzhou Industrial Park Biotech Development Co., Ltd. (Suzhou BioBay, a leading Biomedical Park in China).

His research focuses on development of novel biomedical materials, controlled drug and protein release systems, and multifunctional gene delivery systems. He has co-authored 320 papers with over 24000 times of citation (H-Index 80). He has been listed as a Highly Cited Researcher by Clarivate Analytics as from 2018.  In the past five years, he has delivered more than 50 invited lectures in the international conferences. He has been served as an Associate Editor of Biomacromolecules (ACS) in 2015-2019, an Associate Editor of Journal of Controlled Release as from 2019, an Editorial/Advisory Board Member of Materials Today, Materials Today Chemistry, Journal of Controlled Release, Nanotechnology, Nano Futures, Journal of Gene Medicine, and Journal of Biomaterials Science Polymer Edition, an Executive Chair of The First, Second, Third, Fourth, and Fifth Symposium on Innovative Polymers for Controlled Delivery (SIPCD 2010, 2012, 2014, 2016, 2018, Suzhou, China), a Guest Editor for Journal of Controlled Release (SIPCD Special Issues, 2011, 2013, 2015, 2017), and a member of Grant Review Panel of the National Natural Science Foundation of China (NSFC) as from 2012.

He received several awards, including Distinguished Young Scholar Award from the National Natural Science Foundation of China (2012), the Bessel Research Award from the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation (2013), Award for Breakthrough Technologies in Drug Delivery Systems in Asia from the Japanese Society of Drug Delivery System and the Controlled Release Society (2013),  Jiangsu Province-Endowed Professorship (2013), Award for Top 10 Most Charming Scientist in Suzhou City (2013), and Biomacromolecules/Macromolecules Young Investigator Award from the American Chemical Society (ACS, 2014). He has recently been elected as a Fellow of the American Institute for Medical and Biological Engineering (AIMBE).
