Cerium N-morpholinomethylphonic acid (MMPA-Ce) with fibrous structure was synthesized via hydrothermal reaction between cerium nitrate hexahydrate and N-morpholinomethylphonic acid. The flame retardancy of high density polyethylene (HDPE) containing various amount of MMPA-Ce was investigated by cone calorimeter. The peak value of heat release rate (PHRR) of HDPE obviously decreased when adding MMPA-Ce. Loading 5 wt% of MMPA-Ce in the HDPE, PHRR was reduced by 30% compared with pure HDPE. In contrary to other intumescent flame retardants, introduction of MMPA-Ce increased the mechanical properties of HDPE. Adding 1 wt% or 2 wt% of MMPA-Ce, the breaking strength is increased by 48% or 74% compared with pure HDPE resin.
