Colloidalcrystallizationofpolymer-modifiedsilicainorganicsolventandincorporationofthecolloidcrystalsintopolymermatrixwereinvestigated.ColloidalcrystallizationofPolymer-graftedsilica(78or136nm)wasobservedinorganicsolvents,whichwerepolarandgoodonesformodifiedpolymer.Thecrystallizationwasconfirmedtooccurduetotheelectrostaticrepulsionbetweenthemodifiedsilicainthesuspension.Neighbouringinter-particledistancesinthecolloidalcrystalswerefairlylongerthanlengthofgraftedpolymerchains.Colloidalcrystalsformedbypolymer-graftedsilicaparticleswereimmobilizedbyastep-wiseprocedureconsistingofgelationbyradicalcopolymerizationfollowedbysolidificationbyfurtherpolymerization.Inthefirststep,thepoly(methylmethacrylate)-graftedsilicacolloidalcrystalsuspensionwassuccessfullyincorporatedintothegelbycopolymerizationofmethylmethacrylate(MMA)and1,2-dimethylacryloyloxyethane(DME).Thesecondradicalpolymerizationofvinylidene-1,3-dioxolane,MMAortrifluoroethylmethacrylate(TFEMA)wasperformedaftersubstitutingthesolventwitheachmonomer.Bythistwo-stepprocedure,thesilicaparticlearrayofcolloidalcrystalswasimmobilizedtomakeintodurablematerial.
