Theeffectoftertiaryhydrogenonthechemicalstabilityofpolymerwasstudied.Theteriaryhydrogen,whichwxistsinthemicrostructure,reallyhadresponsibleforpooroxidativelyabilitiesofsulphonatedpolystyrenemembranes.Westudiedperformancesbetweena-methylsulphonatedpolystyreneandsulphonatedpolystyrenebumethodsofmodelcompounds,C13nmr,etal.Theconclusionswehaddrawnarefollowing:①Comparedspectrumsofmodelcompounds,therewerestrongresonancesintherangesof169-180ppm,50-80ppmand15-35ppminspectrumofsulphonatedisopropylbenzeneafterhadbeenagedfor8days；②Sulphonatedpolystyrenemembranesexhibitedseveraltimesmoreweightloss(20%)duringexposuretoanoxidizingagingsolutionthandidpolyαmembranes(7.0%)；③Theenergyefficienciesofexperimentalcellusedsulphonatedpolystyrenemembranedecreasedrapidlytolessthan50%after120cyclesinacyclingtestcell.Theenergyefficienciesofexperimentalcellusedsulphonatedpolyα-methylstyrenemembranewere70%after320cycles.Andthisarticlealsosupportsanewmethodtomodifiedpolystyrenemembranes.
