Enormouseffortshavebeenattemptedtodevelopphosphorusbasedflameretardantsystemswhichcanbereplacehalogen-freeflameretardant(FR)systemforawiderangeofpolymersfromhighlyflammabletoself-extinguishone[1-3].Inadditiontothat,thesynergismbetweennitrogenandphosphoruselementshasbeenattemptedandhasbeenfoundtobevalidforsomecases[4-6].However,thecombinationofsulfurandphosphoruselementshasnotbeendeeplyinvestigated.Inthisstudy,thepossibilityofthecombinationofsulfurandphosphoruselementsforenhancingtheflameretardancyisinvestigated.Forthispurpose,threesulfurcontainingphosphorusflameretardants(P-SFRs),i.e.,pentaerythritolbis(phenylthiophosphonate)(S-PBPP),triphenylthiophosphate(S-TPP),andS,S,S-triphenyltrithiophosphate(3S-TPP)weresynthesizedandtheirflameretardingperformanceswereinvestigatedinanattempttocomparetheflameretardancyefficiencyofP-Svsphosphoruscompounds,i.e.pentaerythritolbis(phenylphosphonate)(PBPP)andtriphenylphosphate(TPP)onPC,EVA,andABS.ThefireretardingefficiencieswereevaluatedbytheLimitingOxygenIndex(LOI),UL-94verticaltest,andpyrolysiscombustionflowcalorimeter(PCFC).ItwasfoundthatP-SFRsexhibitthelowerdegradationtemperatureandleavemorecharredresiduesthanthecounterphosphorusFRs.ThefireretardingefficiencyofP-SFRisslightlybetterthanPFRbutthedifferenceisnotsignificant.
