Thefireretardancymechanismsofaluminiumphosphinate(IPA)anddifferentlayeredsilicates(unmodifiedormodifiedbyammoniumorphosphoniumsalts)inpolyurethanerigidfoamswasstudied.Theireffectonthepolyurethanedecompositionpathwayswascharacterizedstudyingbothgasandsolidphaseevolvedduringthermogravimetricanalysis(TGA).ThegasesevolvedduringTGAtrialsininertatmospherewerestudiedbymeansofthermogravimetrycoupledwithmassspectrometry(TG–MS)andthermogravimetrycoupledwithFouriertransforminfraredspectroscopy(TG–FTIR),whilethesolidresidueswereanalysedbyFTIRandEnergyDispersiveX-ray(EDX)analysis.TheresultsobtainedshowedthatIPAandphosphoniummodifiedclayreleasephosphorusinbothsolidandgasphase,whileammoniummodifiedandunmodifiedclayhavenogasphaseaction.Ammoniummodifiedclayreleasesaliphaticchainsegmentingasphasewhichare,clearly,noteffectiveinflameretardancy.Thekineticsofthermaldegradationofpolyurethanerigidfoams,containingflameretardantandlayeredsilicates,wasstudiedbykineticmodelssuchasKissingerandFlynn-Wall-Ozawa.Flameretardedpolyurethanenanocompositefoamsshowedthreestepofweightlossininertatmosphere.DegradationphenomenainvolvingdifferentchemicalcompoundsoverlapeachothersandthusthedeterminationoftheexactsolidphasemechanismaccordingtoCoats-Redfernmethodwasgenerallynotpossible.
