Thelasttwodecadeshavewitnessedintensivestudiesontheferromagneticmicrowiresworldwide.Recentattentionhasturnedtothedevelopmentofinnovativematerialsandcompositesderivedfromthesemicrowires.Throughincorporatingevenextremelylowconcentrationofmicrowires(一0.05vol%),theresultantcompositeexhibitsamultitudeoffunctionalitieswhicharedesirableforarangeoftechnologicalapplications.Thispapersamplesseveralcasestudiesoftheongoingresearchonmicrowirecompositesfromsynthesistostructuralandpropertyevaluationwithafocusonthemulti-functionalitiespresentedinthesemicrowire-composites.Startingwithanintroductionofmultifunctionalcompositesandthetheoriespertinenttothemultiplefunctionalitiesofmicrowirecomposites,adetaileddescriptionoffabricationmethodsofmicrowirecompositesisgivenwithacomparisonofdifferentprocessingtechniques.Twofundamentaleffects,namely,giantmagnetoimpedance(GMI)andstress-impedance(GSI)effectsofmicrowirecompositesarediscussedinrelativetothemonolithicmicrowires.Microwavetunablepropertiesandassociatedpeculiaritiesofelectromagneticspectraareanalysedinthepresenceoflow(一300e)andhighmagneticfield(uptoIkOe)andstressfield.Theferromagneticwirecompositeshavealsobeenshowntopossessmetamaterialcharacteristicsandmicrowaveabsorptioncapability.Withadiscussionontheunderlyingphysicsoftheinfluenceofcompositearchitecturesuchasmaterialparametersofmicrowiresandmicrowireperiodicityontheperformanceofresultantcomposites,usefulinsightsareprovidedforaneffectivedesignofsmartcompositesforspecificengineeringapplicationssuchasstructuralhealthmonitoring,stresssensing,invisiblecloaking,microwaveabsorptionapplications.
