Theconductivepolymercompositesareakindofthemostimportantfunctionalpolymermaterials.Inthecomposites,carbonblackisawideusedconductivefiller.TheformationofconductivenetworkofCBplaysanimportantroleinthehighconductivityofCBfilledcomposites.TheproblemishowtoformthenetworklinkofCBparticlesatlowcontentofCBsoastobalancetheotherpropertiessuchasmechanicalpropertiesandprocessingbehaviorandcost.ThekeyroutefordecreasingtheelectricalpercolationthresholdistheselectivedispersionofCBinonephaseofpolymerblends.Inthispaper,theconductivepolypropylene(PP)compositesweredesignedtoalternativelayercomposites,inwhichonelayerisconductivePPcomposites,andanotherisPPorPP/nylon6blends.Thenylon6filled-polypropylene(PA6-PP,denotedasA)/carbonblackfilled-polypropylene(CB-PP,denotedasB)alternatingmultilayercompositeswerepreparedthroughlayer-multiplyingextrusion,byutilizingtwoextruderscombinedwithanassemblyoflayer-multiplyingelements(LMEs).AandBwereextrudedfromdifferentextrudersandcombinedasa2-layermeltinthecoextrusionblock,thenflowedthroughnLMEsforming2n+llayerslikeA(BA)nB.Effectsoflayernumber,effectsofnylonphaseandsecondarymeltprocessingontheelectricalpercolationofCBwerestudied.Thescanningelectronmicrographs(SEM)showthatwiththeincreaseoflayernumbers,PA6fibrillizedalongextrusiondirection(ED),andpartsofCBparticlesmigratedtowardadjacentalayersandadheredtothesurfacesofPA6fibrilsaroundinterfaces.Theresultofvolumeresistivityindicatedthatcomparedwiththecasealongtransversedirection,theresistivityalongEDwasdecreaseddistinctlyaslayernumberbeyond64.ItrevealedthattheorientationofPA6phaseandthemigrationofCBparticlesacceleratedtheformationofconductivechannelsalongED.Forforminga3DconductivenetworkinthematrixandpromotingmoreCBparticlestobeabsorbedonthePA6fibrils,themultilayersamplesexperiencedasecondaryblendingprocessinginaninternalmixerat1950C,whichwasbetweenthemeltingtemperatureofPPandPA6.Itwasfoundthatwithincreasingtheconcentrationofnylonphase,asignificantdecreaseofvolumeresistivitywasobservedalongrandomdirections.SEMimagesshowthattheoriginalorientationofPA6fibrilsalongEDdisappeared,whiletheirsurfaceswerecoveredwithalargenumberofCBparticles.Theseresultssuggestedthatadesired3Dconductivenetworkwasformedintheblendedsystem.
