Flowstructuresandmixingbehaviourareimportantaspectstobeanalyzedforpolymerprocessingoperations.Mostoften,theviscoelasticnatureoffluidsandthepresenceofreactionshavetobeconsideredtoobtainacompleteunderstanding.Itisalsoknownthatkinematicmixingdominatesoverdiffusionalmixinginpolymericmaterials.Theflowofviscoelasticfluidsalsooffersanextremelyinterestingsetofproblemsandhasbeenthefocusofresearchactivitiesoverthelastfewdecades.Duetothecomplexitiesofviscoelasticfluidflow,thedifferentbenchmarkgeometrieshavebeenstudieswhichincludesuddenexpansion(Stielmeieretal.,1989),channelflow(Yamamotoetal.,2003)etc.Lid-drivencavityisonesuchgeometryandtheflowofnon-Newtonianfluidsinlid-drivencavitieshasbeenstudiedbymanyresearchers(Grilletetal.,1999).Suchkindofgeometriesareencounteredinvariouspolymerprocessingoperationsparticularlyininjectionmoldinganddiecastingareofpracticalinterest(Anderson,1999).Atimescaleincavityflowscanbeintroducedinperiodicallydrivencavities(PDC)andthesehavebeenshowntobeprototypicalmixingdevices(Anderson,1999).TheflowandmixingofNewtonianfluidsinperiodicallydrivencavitieshaverecentlybeenstudiedinourgroup(Srirametal.,2006:1,2).ThetemporalandspatialvariationsandthestreamlinepatternsfromPIVmeasurementswerecomparedwithCFDsimulationsforawiderangeofRe.Thekinematicmixingwasalsoinvestigatedanditwasfoundthattheextentofmixingincreaseswiththeamplitudeandfrequencyoftheplatemotion.
