Polymernanocompositeswerepreparedbytwodifferentkindsofnanocompositeparticles.Oneofthemishighcrosslinkingpoly(methylmethacrylate)/polystyrene(PMMA(HC)/PS)andtheotherishighcrosslinkingpoly(methylmethacrylate)/poly(methylmethacrylate-co-styrene)/polystyrene(PMMA(HC)/P(MMA-co-St)/PS),theybothhavenanosizedPMMA(HC)seedparticlesandthickenoughPSshelltoformmatrix.MoreoverthesecondonehasaverythinP(MMA-co-St)interfaciallayer.Thestabilityofthedispersionofnanoparticlesinpolymernanocompositeswasinvestigated.Bytransmissionelectronmicroscopy(TEM)observation,itwasfoundthatPMMA(HC)nanoparticleshavestabledispersioninPSmatrixforPMMA(HC)/PS.However,forPMMA(HC)/P(MMA-co-St)/PS,theclusteringoccursobviouslyunderquiescentmoltenconditionandweakershearfield,andtheclusteringisdynamicreversible.Theseresultssuggestthatthecoalescencemechanismofnanoparticlesinnanocompositeisdifferentfromthatinbinarypolymerblend.
