Aneworganic-solublearomaticpolyimidewithbiphenylside-groupshasbeensynthesizedfrom4,4ˊ-oxydiphthalicanhydride(ODPA)and3,5-diamino-benzonic-4ˊ-biphenylester(DABBE)viaaone-steppolymerizationinm-cresol.Ahighermolecularweightpolyimidehasbeenobtainedbytheadditionofchlorotrmethylsilane(TMSCl)insolutiontoform,insitu,silylateddiaminebypolycondensation.TheoptimumamountsofTMSClrelativetothenumberofaminofunctionalgroupsare100%.Thispolyimideissolubleinm-cresol,allowingfiberstobespunfromisotropicsolutionusingadry-jetwetspinningmethod.Whencoagulationbathofspinningwastheethanol/water,mostofas-spunfibersmorphologiesareporous-like.Basedonaternaryphasediagramofm-cresol,ehanolandwater,thesolidandirregularcross-sectionalas-spunfiberscanalsobeobtainedbyvaryingtherateofpolymercoagulationthroughadjustmentinnonsolvent/solventmiscibilityofthecoagulationbath.Inaddition,thegelspinningprocesswasalsointroducedintothispolyimidesystem,whichspinningresultsshowedthatitwasmoreeasytodrawduringthegelspinningstageandobtainthesolidcircularcross-sectionalas-spunfibersthanthatoftheaboveprocess.Andthemechanicalprosperitiesofthesetwokindsofannealedfibersarealsoreported.
