Janusnanoparticleshavebeensuccessfullyusedinpolymerblendsascompatibilizersinexperimentalandsimulatedinvestigations1,2.Duetotheamphiphilicnature,theyarestronglyadsorbedatinterfacesbetweenimmiscibledomainstoreducemuchinterfacialtensionandthereforethegrowthrateofdomainsisretarded.SincechallengesinthesynthesisofJanusnanoparticlesareonthewaytobeingovercome,1-5Janusnanoparticleswithdifferentgeometriesarepossibletobeavailable.ThisinspiresustostudythesimilaritiesanddifferencesbetweenJanusnanoparticleswithvariousarchitecturesusedincompatibilizingimmisciblepolymerblends.Ingeneral,Janusnanoparticlesaremainlydividedintothreegeneralclassesaccordingtotheirarchitectureanddimensionality.Theyarethree-dimensionalJanusspheres((a)),two-dimensionalJanusdiscs((c)and(d))andone-dimensionalJanuscylinders((d)and(e)),respectively.AschematicrepresentationofthearchitectureisshowninFig.1.UndertheconditionswherebothvolumefractionandnetareasofJanusnanoparticlesarefixed,theassemblyofJanusnanoparticlesatinterfaceisrelatedtotheparticle-matrixinteraction.AsshowninFig2,withsmallparticle-matrixinteractions,the“standing”particlestendtoparallelwitheachotherattheinterfacesandformlamellarphase,whiletheothersystemsformmicroemulsion-likestructures.Furthermore,thephaseseparationdynamicsisaffectedbythetotalcontactareasbetweenthetwosidesofJanusnanoparticles.Inaddition,the“lying”nanoparticlesaremuchsuperiortosphericaland“standing”nanoparticlestoretardthedomaincoarsening.
