Carbonnanotubefibersarepotentiallystrongandhighelectricconductive,andarepromisingtobedivvelopedintoapplicationgsfornewcompositeandnewtextiles.Thedevelopmentofcintinuousnanotubefibersisthekeysteptowardstheseapplicationgs.Previouseffortstodevelopthefiberandfilmsofnnaotubeshavebeenfocusedmainlyonthepostprocessingofnanotubes.Inthepresentwork.Ishouwthatfibersandribbonsofcarbonnanotubescanbespundirectlyfromthegasstreaminachemicalvapordepositionreaction.Underthe‘spinnable’reactionconditionsthatwerecontrolledbythesynthesisconditions,thenanotubesgrowinginthereactionzoneformedaverylowdensityaerogelwhichcanbecontinuouslydrawnfromthefurnaceasafiberandribbon.Theaerogelwascapturedandwoundedupbyamechanicaldrivenrotatingspindlethatwasseteitherparallelororthogonaltothegasstreamperformedatdifferentregionsinthehotzoneoratthecoldendofthereactor(Figure).Thecontinuousspinningprocesscanalsobedevelopedfor‘spincoating’tomakecomplicatedshapesofnanotubeobjects.Thepresentdirectspinningprocessistechnicallyandeconomicallyfeasible,andopensanewwaytofabricatecontinuouscarbonnanotubefibersandcomposite.
