Themaincharacteristicofelastomerswithsaturatedpolymethylenechains,e.g.Ethylene-Propylenecopolymers(EPM),istheirhighresistanceagainstozoneoroxygenaging.Degradationofsuchpolymersproceedsslowlyandrarelycausesmain-chainscission.Thissuperiorstabilityisduetotheabsenceofcarbon-carbondoublebondsinthemainchain,whichareespeciallysensitivetooxygenorozoneattack.Adisadvantageoftheabsenceofunsaturationisreactivityreduction,whatmakesthistypeofelastomersdifficulttocrosslink.Theyarecommonlycrosslinkedbyfreeradicalreactionsinitiatedbyperoxidesorperoxide/co-agentcuringsystems.1-3However,thesefreeradicalreactionssufferfromalowefficiencyandtheoccurrenceofunwantedsidereactionslikepolymermainchain-scissionanddisproportionation.Moreover,whenvulcanizingoil-containingrubbersusingperoxide/coagentcuringsystemsbycompressionmolding,theyaredifficulttoreleasefromthemold.Thesedisadvantagesofperoxidecuringpromptacontinuoussearchfornewcuringchemistry.
