Anewhydrogelmicrofiberwithdenseporestructurewaspreparedbyice-segregation-inducedself-assemblyprocess.Mono-dispersedsilica/poly(N-isopropylacrylamide(PNIPAM)core-shellcompositemicrogelswerefirstlysynthesizedbyseed-emulsionpolymerization.3-(trimethoxysilyl)propylmethacrylatemodifiedcolloidalsilicaparticleswereusedasseeds,N-isopropylacrylamide(NIPAM)wasusedasmonomerandN,N’-methylene-bis-acrylamide(MBA)wasusedascrosslinker.Thenthermo-responsivehollowPNIPAMmicrogelswereproducedbyremovingthesilicacoresoftheSiO2/PNIPAMcore-shellcompositemicrogelsbychemicaletchingandusinghydrofluoricacid.Finallyhydrogelmicrofibersweremadebyunidirectionalfreezingwith1wt%aqueoushollowPNIPAMmicrogeldispersioninliquidnitrogenbath,andtheformedicecrystalswereremovedbyfreeze-drying.Manyorderlyarrayeddentswereobservedonthesurfaceofthehydrogelmicrofibersbyfield-emissionscanningelectronmicroscopy,whichindicatesdensepackedmono-dispersedhollowPNIPAMmicrogelsformed.
