Singleconicalnanoporeswithtipdiameterrangedfromseveralnmtohundredofnmwerefabricatedbyetchingofsingleheavyiontrackinpolymermembrane,andtheirasymmetricalconductancebehaviorinelectrolytewereinvestigatedexperimentallyandtheoretically(NIMB,2008;PRE,2007).Basedonthesingleconicalnanopore,twokindsofsyntheticnanopore-DNAsystemswerefabricatedandtheycanbereversiblygatedbyswitchingDNAmotorsimmobilizedinsidethenanopores.Thisnovelnanopore-DNAsystem,whichwasgatedbycollectivefoldingofstructuredDNAmoleculesrespondingtotheexternalstimulus,forexample,pHvalueandK+ionconcentration,providedanartificialcounterpartofswitchableprotein-madenanoporechannels(JACS,2008,2009,highlightedbyNatureandNatureChinarespectively).Inaddition,modifiedwithPNIPAMbrushes,atemperature-responsivenanoporewasfabricated,whichcanmimicbiologicalKirchannelswell(Small,inrevision).Throughthesingletracketchednanopore,electricalpowergenerateswhenelectrolytewasdrivenbecauseofnano-scaleporeradiusandhighsurfacechargedensity.Theexperimentindicatesthatstreamingcurrentincreaseforlowelectrolyteconcentrationandthehighestenergyconversionefficiencywasobtained(APL,2008).Finally,basedonthesingleconicalnanoporeinpolymermembrane,aconcentrationgradientdrivenIoniccurrentsourcewillbedemonstrated,inwhichtheambientenergyintheformofionconcentrationgradientcanbeharvestedintouseableelectricenergy.
