Thecombinationofconductivepolymerswithcarbonnanotubesoffersanattractiveroutetointroduceelectronicpropertiesbasedonmorphologicalmodificationorelectronicinteractionbetweenthetwocomponents.Wepreparedthreedifferenttypesofconductivepolymers,i.e.polyaniline(PANI),polypyrrole(PPy)andpoly[p-2,5-bis(n-octyloxy)phenylvinylene](POPV)byinsituchemicalpolymerizationofconjugatemonomersinthepresenceofmulti-walledcarbonnanotubes(MWCNTs).TEMimagesshowedthattheresultingnanocompositesexhibitedtightanduniformcore–shellstructures,whichbenefitedfromtheuseofMWCNTswithlessdefectsasatemplate.Thethicknessofpolymershell-layerscanbeeffectivelycontrolledbychangingtheweightratioofMWCNTstoconjugatemonomers.FTIRspectraindicatedthatstrengthenedelectrondelocalisationandconjugationalongthepolymerchainsappearedbytheincorporationofcarbonnanotubes.XRDresultsfurthershowedthattheinteractionbetweenpolymersandMWCNTsgraduallyweakenedwiththeincreaseofpolymershell-layerthickness.Thenanotubularmorphologyandstrongπ-π*interactionfortheresultingcompositeaspromisingelectrodematerialsareresponsibleforthelowerchargetransferimpedance,lowerinternalresistance,andtheenhancedelectrochemicalpropertiesincomparisontothatshownfortheirmixedsystem.
