Theenvironmentalfriendlywaterbornepolyurethane(WPU)hasbeenwidelyusedinmanyfieldsbecauseofitsexcellentchemicaladhesion.Inthisstudy,WPUemulsionwaspreparedbycondensationreactionfromrawmaterialstoformpre-polymerandfollowedbyneutralizingandemulsifying.ThentheWPUemulsionwasblockedwithsilanecouplingagent.Thechemicalstructure,thermalstabilityandparticlesizeofresultantPUweretestedbyfouriertransforminfrared(FTIR)spectra,thermogravimetry(TG)analysisandlaserparticleanalyzer.Theadhesivepropertiywascharacterizedbytheinterfacialshearstrength(IFSS)betweenPUmatrixandUHMWPEfiber.SomeparticularcharacteristicabsorptionpeaksinFTIRspectrumprovedsiliconehadbeensuccessfullyintroducedinPUmolecularchainandformedSi-O-Sistructure.TGanalysisshowedthattheheatresistanceofresultantPUwassignificantlyimprovedaftersilanemodification.TheaverageparticlesizeofsilanemodifiedPUbecamelargerandthesizedistributionbecamewiderwithincreasingofthesilanecontent.TheIFSSbetweenmodifiedPUandUHMWPEfiberincreasedwithincreasingofsilanecontent.Whenthesilanecontentwas2%,thegeneralperformanceofmodifiedPUwouldbemorebalancedand50%increasementintheadhesivepropertywasgot.
