Interfacialmicromechanicalperformanceofcarbonfiberreinforcedpolyphenylenesulfide(PPS)compositeswasstudiedbymicrobondtestwhichhadbeenwellacceptedasthemostimportantmicromechanicaltestforevaluatingtheinterfacialpropertiesbetweenthefiberandmatrix.Anovelhomemadetestapparatuswhichisoperatedsimplywasemployedandadifferentmicrosamplepreparationmethodwasintroduced.ComparativetestsofvariousloadingspeedsweremadetoinvestigatetheinfluenceoftestingratesontheinterfacialshearstrengthofCF/PPSmicro-composite.Itwasfoundthattheinterfacialshearstrengthincreasedwithincreasingthefiberembeddedlengthatthespeedsbelow0.02mm/sandabove0.04mm/s,butituniformlydistributedalongtheinterfaceat0.02and0.04mm/s.Itisrecommendedtoperformthemicrobondtestinthetestraterangeof0.02-0.04mm/s,wheretheinterfacialshearstrengthdoesnotchangewiththeembeddedlengthandnosignificantdeviationsareobserved,thuscouldbetterreflectthetrueinterfacestrengthofthecomposite.Comparisonofinterfacialpropertiesofannealingtreatmentsamplesandatmosphericplasmatreatedcarbonfiber/PPScompositeswerealsoinvestigated.Theresultsshowedthattheapparentinterfacialshearstrength(rapp)valueofmicrodropletsincreasedfrom33.5+4.3MPato43.9+2.3MPaafterannealing.Moreover,plasma-modifiedCFwascharacterizedbyscanningelectronmicroscope(SEM)andX-rayphotoelectronspectroscopy(XPS).Itshowedthatthesurfaceroughnesswasimproved,andtheO/Catomicratiowasincreasedfrom16.2%t028.5%.Thoughhydrogenandcovalentbondingswereinducedatfiber/matrixinterface,therappvaluesofCFfiber/PPScompositesdecreasedt036.4+1.0MPawithatmosphericplasmatreatment,duetotheremoveofthesizelayercoatedonthesurfaceofCF.
