Electrospinninghasbeendevelopedtofabricatecompositenanofibersforbiomedicalapplicationssuchasdrugdeliverysystemsandtissueengineeringscaffolds.Theobjectiveofthisstudywastoevaluatethephysical–chemicalpropertiesanddrugreleasepropertiesofelectrospuncore-shellpoly(L-lacticacid)(PLLA)fibrousmembranesusedasacontrolledreleasecarriersfortetracyclinehydrochloride(TCH).ThefibrousmembraneswerefabricatedbycoaxialelectrospinninginwhichPLLA(2:1mixtureofchloroformandacetonebyweightasasolvent)andTCH/PLLA(2:1mixtureofmethanolandchloroformbyweightasasolvent)wereusedastheshellandthecorematerials,respectively.Theelectrospunfibersandtheirmembraneswerecharacterizedbyscanningelectronmicroscope(SEM),transmissionelectronmicroscopy(TEM),anddifferentialscanningcalorimetry(DSC),whereasthemechanicalperformancesoffibrousmembranesweretestedthroughtensiletest.ThedrugreleasebehaviorwereinvestigatedbyUV–VISspectroscopy.Resultsindicatedthatthemorphologyoffibersanddistributionoffiberdiameterreliedontheprocessingparameters,andtheuniformcompositefiberswitheminentmechanicalpropertiescouldbeobtainedwhenthecoreandshellsolutionconcentrationswerekeptat5wt%(0.3ml.h-1flowrate)and8-10wt%(5.0ml.h-1flowrate),respectively.TCHcouldbeencapsulatedinthePLLAultrafinefibersandmaintainasustainingreleasefromthefibrousmembranes,suggestingthatthethusobtainedcore-shellcompositefibrousmembranescanbeapromisingcandidatefordrugreleasecarrier.
