Recently,polymer-matrixnanocomposites,especiallycontainingclaylayersorcarbonnanotubes(CNTs),haveattractedconsiderableattentionowingtotheiruniquemechanical,andmulti-functionalpropertiesresultingfromthenano-scalemicrostructureandextremelylargeinterfacialarea.To-date,themainchallengesaretoimprovethedispersionorexfoliation,andalignmentofclaylayersorCNTsinapolymermatrixwhenprocessingthesenanocomposites.Severalreviewarticles[1-4]havesummarizedtherecentprogressesinthoseareas.Duetotheuniquemolecularstructureofliquidcrystals(LC),theliquidcrystallinephaseiseasytoorientalongtheappliedfield,suchasforce,electricandmagneticfields.Kawasumietal.[5,6]preparedanematiclowmolarmassliquidcrystal/claycomposite,andusedthelowmolarmassLCtoinducetheorientationofclaylayersalongthedirectionoflow-frequentelectricfield.Here,wereportrecentresultsonshear-inducedalignmentofexfoliatedclaylayersandCNTsinpolymer-matrixnanocompositesvialiquidcrystallinepolymer(LCP)orlowmolarmassliquidcrystal.
