Thepermeabilityofpolymerisdeterminedbyitschainconfiguration,phasemorphologyandtheinteractionwiththepenetrant.Basedontheseprinciples,thepermeabilityofthepolyesterofpoly(ethyleneterephthalate)isenhancedthroughdifferentmodifiersinordertoapplyittobarrierpackingbottle.Inthispaper,poly(m-xylyleneadipamide-terephthalylamide)(MXD6T)-nanometersilicondioxide(SiO2)nanocomposite(NMXD6T)oligomerwithSiO2loadfrom5%to30%(bymass)waspreparedandusedtoimprovethebarrierpropertyofpolyesterbottlematerials.InpreparingNMXD6T,silicaisin-situpolymerizedwithhexanediacid,terephthalicacid(TPA),alkylandaromaticdiamine.Thedifferentmolarratioofhexanediacidtoterephthalicacidwiththesamemolardiamineisdesignedtogivethecompositeswithdifferentviscosity,thermalperformanceandthebarrierproperties.The3-10timesofenhancedpermeabilityofthesepolyestermatrixnanocompositeswiththisaboveMXD6Ttopurepolyesterresinsarereported.TherelationshipofNMXD6T’sconfigurationandthepermeabilitypropertiesofpolyesternanocompositeischaracterizedbytechniquesofthedynamicscanningcalorimeter(DSC),FTInfrared,andTransmissionElectronicMicroscopy(TEM).DSCshowsthatNMXD6Tistotallyamorphous.FTIRshowstheexistenceofsilicon-oxygenbondformedinthenanocomposite,andTEMindicatesanaveragesizefrom30nmto100nmofSiO2particlesbeingphaseseparatedfromMXD6Tmatrix,whilewellbondedtothepolyesterchains.ItisconcludedthattheNMXD6T-PETnanocompositesmaybeoneofthebestwaytoenhancethebarrierpropertiesofpolyestersfortheirpackingapplication.
